Dear Senator, I am a part of an exciting project that was kicked off on Mother's Day - May 11, 2003. Mine are two of many hands weaving an equilt across the nation by educating and mobilizing mothers around the country about needed reforms in Social Security. Each time that one of us emails a new United States Senator about this critical priority, we are weaving a new epatch into our equilt. Once each United States Senator has received an email from a mom, our equilt will be complete. How long will it take? We think not long. The reforms that we seek include reducing the term of marriage required for Social Security spousal benefits from ten to seven years. We hope that in addition to this, you will agree with and seek additional retirement support for us mothers and family caregivers who earn anywhere from zero to $16,000 per year while raising children. Women are at special risk of poverty in old age, and Social Security credit for moms like me will help protect me against destitution in retirement. I have taken up the task of this equilt because I believe that it is time to safeguard the source of our nation's human capital - mothers. I also believe that if mothers don't help themselves, then they do a disservice to self and to the American family.
